The Bvumba Mountains, a Paradise Waiting for you!

Aptly named the “Mountains of the Mist,” The Bvumba Mountains, loom in the morning mist far off the beaten track in a picturesque and untouched part of Zimbabwe.​

A few kilometres outside Mutare, the road to the Bvumba starts its scenic climb, winding through steep, tree-clad mountains and rolling farmland. At each turn, new landscapes over the surrounding countryside are revealed, becoming more dramatic as the summit is approached.

Here, you will find their attention divided between the indigenous forest and exotic flora and the views to the east over the Mozambique plain, almost a thousand metres below. They provide an enchanting walk with wooden bridges, aloes, streams and lakes and there are many fantastic plants gathered from all over the world including a range of orchids, tree ferns, fuchsias, hydrangeas, azaleas and lily ponds.

A Birder’s Paradise

The Bvumba is a hot spot for birding enthusiasts and there are lots of special birds, including the Swynnerton’s Robin, which lives and breeds in small patches of forest. Other birds encountered include Chirinda Apalis, Variable Sunbirds, Livingstone’s Turaco, Yellow-Streaked Greenbul and Stripe-Cheeked Greenbul amongst more common species.

Leopard Rock Hotel is a well-frequented hotel with a pretty golf course and it is a good place to see the silvery-cheeked hornbills when the fig trees are fruiting. On the golf course, birders may be lucky to see the Red-faced Crimson wing.

Tony’s Coffee Shop

There is always exquisite bird song in the forests and any visit should include a visit to Tony’s Coffee Shop. This charming coffee shop is more than a place for parched travellers. It offers a wide variety of refreshments but the cake will definitely make a lasting impression on all who visit. The cakes are all freshly made and the unique flavours will pleasantly surprise you and will attest to the creativity and mastery of the chef.
